Koyasan Cable Car

Getting to Know the Nankai Cable Line

Technical Specifications and Short Journey

Distance: The line spans a length of approximately 0.8 kilometers (800 meters).
Elevation: The train scales a very steep mountain slope with a vertical elevation difference of about 328 meters.Travel Duration: The uphill or downhill journey takes only about 5 minutes. Speed: The average operating speed ranges around 10 km/h with a maximum speed of 11 km/h.

The Koyasan Cable Car (officially known as the Nankai Cable Line or Kosaku-sen) is a funicular transportation system (a counterbalanced cable railway on a steep slope) operated by Nankai Electric Railway. This railway serves as a crucial link and the only direct rail route between Gokurakubashi Station at the foot of the mountain and Koyasan Station at the peak of Mount Koya, Wakayama Prefecture.

History and Eco-Friendly Innovation

Operating Since 1930: This cable railway has been serving pilgrims, tourists, and locals since June 29, 1930, making it a vital part of the history of religious tourism transportation in Japan.
Modern Fleet: In March 2019, Nankai renewed its fleet by introducing the new N10/N20 series cars, which are more advanced, comfortable, and feature large windows to maximize the scenic views.
100% Renewable Energy: Since June 2021, the Koyasan Cable Car has been recognized as the first funicular railway in Japan to operate using 100% renewable energy (such as solar, hydro, wind, and thermal power) to support commitments toward reducing carbon emissions

Unique Experiences Aboard the Cable Car

Seamless Transfer System: The cable car departure schedule at Gokurakubashi Station is always tailored and synchronized with the arrival of trains from Osaka (Nankai Koya Line / Limited Express Koya / Tenku). Passengers do not need to worry about missing connections or confusion, as the transition is exceptionally well-organized.
Spectacular Scenery: As the train crawls upward through the steep slope, passengers are treated to views of dense mountain forests. This landscape transforms beautifully across the seasons—vibrant green in the summer or filled with the colorful red hues of momiji autumn leaves in the fall.
Gateway to the Spiritual World: Upon arriving at Koyasan Station at the upper end of the cable line, the journey continues via a local bus (Rinkan Bus) toward the heart of the temple town and the ancient Okunoin cemetery complex.
